This Suncorp Bank BillSplitter feature lets one person pay, then send 'virtual IOUs' to the remaining members of the party via SMS.

If you are in the hospitality business, you may be one of what seems to be a growing number of cafes and restaurants that don't allow customers to split bills.

But technology is coming to the rescue with developments such as the BillSplitter feature of the latest version of Suncorp Bank's mobile banking app for iOS and Android.

This makes it easy for one person to pay the bill and then send 'virtual IOUs' to the remaining members of the party via SMS, complete with the payer's bank details and a unique reference so the rest can easily pay back their shares by direct deposit.

For those situations were an even split is not appropriate, BillSplitter users can adjust the individual amounts.

BillSplitter matches the incoming payments with the original transaction, tracks any cash payments received, and makes provision for sending reminders if necessary.

Suncorp claims to be the first Australian bank to add bill splitting to its mobile banking app, and we think other banks will probably follow suit.
