Telstra has dramatically increased the data allowances on two of its business broadband plans, hinting that the idea will spread more widely.
Effective immediately, the $80 Basic BizEssentials fixed line plus broadband bundle includes 100GB of data per month (up from 50GB) while the $80 Business Broadband ADSL plan now offers 300GB (up from 50GB).
The good news for existing customers on these plans is that they will get the additional data allowances although it may take a few months. The exception is those on the unlimited Business Broadband ADSL plan, but then how can you improve on unlimited?
"A reliable internet connection and the need for a healthy data allowance is fundamental to running a business in this digital age. That's why we've increased data allowances on our Telstra BizEssentials bundle and Telstra Business Broadband ADSL plans, and we will have further increases across other business products in coming months," said Will Irving, group managing director of Telstra Business.
To put things in perspective, five years ago the $80 Business Broadband plan only provided 15GB of data per month.
There are other improvements to the BizEssentials and Business Broadband ADSL plans.
BizEssentials plans provide free calling to "all eligible fixed and mobile services while in Australia listed on the same account for free". Telstra previously imposed a 10-service limit on this facility. For existing customers, it seems this will only apply once they've been moved to the revised plans.
Excess usage charges on Business Broadband plans have been slashed from $0.01 per MB ($10 per GB) to $0.001 per MB ($1 per GB).
Reductions are always welcome, but if you start with 300GB for $80 ($0.27 per GB) it's hard to see why an extra gigabyte should cost almost four times as much, unless Telstra reckons the average customer will use just a quarter of the allowance. Excess usage charges are capped at $300 per service per billing period, but only on new plans according to Telstra's web site.
