If you label a lot of boxes, binders and other things around your workplace, this label printer from Brother might be of interest.
While digital storage means there are fewer ring binders and file boxes in our offices than once upon a time, you might still need to label things.
Uses for adhesive labels include cables (if only to distinguish yours from your colleagues'), asset tags (often with barcodes), name badges, address labels, and yes, distinguishing one storage box from another without having to look inside.
Brother's latest P-Touch label printer is the $249 PT-P750W and it prints labels up to 24mm wide on "thin yet extremely strong" laminated polyester film.
It uses thermal printing technology, so you never need ink or toner, just rolls of the label material which is available in various combinations of black, red, blue, white and gold print on clear, white, black, yellow, red, blue, green, orange, yellow and silver tape.
Flexible, strong adhesive, tamper-evident and fabric variants are available in certain colour combinations. The tapes come in 3.5, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24mm widths, but not all variations are available in every size.
What sets the PT-P750W apart from other P-Touch models is the Wi-Fi interface for sharing between multiple devices. It also incorporates NFC (near field communication) to provide 'touch and connect' simplicity when used with devices that also support that technology.
It comes with software for Windows and OS X (just connect the printer to a computer via a USB cable to install the software), and printing apps are available for iOS and Android devices.
While mains power is required to operate at the full 30mm per second print speed, the PT-P750W can also run on AA batteries or an optional rechargeable battery pack for mobility, in which case the maximum speed is 20mm per second. Since a typical label is probably no more than 80mm long, that is hardly an inconvenience.
