Zoom2u could be set to shake up the courier business in much the same way as services such as ingogo and Uber are affecting the taxi trade.

Initially limited to a 60km radius of Sydney, the Zoom2u app for Android and iOS lets you book a pickup which is automatically allocated to the closest participating driver. Once that happens you are given an ETA and are able to track their location right through to the destination. If necessary, you can phone or SMS your driver directly.

When delivery is made, the customer is notified by email and is invited to rate the service they received.

"We've got law firms using Zoom2u to send important documents to their clients, telecom providers sending SIM cards to their customers as well as banks sending important documents," said Zoom2u CEO Steve Orenstein.

Zoom2u plans to expand to Melbourne and Brisbane by the end of September, and then to Adelaide and Perth by the end of 2014.

Drivers with their own commercially-insured vehicle are invited to apply to join Zoom2u.
