See a list of the latest locations getting attention from those building the NBN.

NBN Co and Telstra have announced an expansion of the initial fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) rollout to another 1000 nodes. Since around 200 premises can be connected per node, this implies some 200,000 homes and businesses may be closer to getting an NBN connection than they were last week.

The areas to be covered are parts of Bribie Island, Bundaberg, Gympie, Caboolture and Warner in Queensland, and Belmont, Boolaroo, Gorokan, Hamilton and Morisset in New South Wales.

No indication was given of when the equipment will be installed or made available to customers.

The initial FTTN deployment in Woy Woy (NSW) will also be expanded, and there are plans to expand the pilot in Umina (NSW).

In May, NBN Co said its first in-premises trial of FTTN had been completed successfully with raw speeds of 105Mbps for downloads and 45Mbps for uploads. Effective speeds experienced by a user would be lower than that, and the premises were 100 metres from the node - a shortcoming of FTTN is that just as with ADSL, speed decreases as the length of the copper cable increases.
