An online petition is calling for Australia Post to "stop gouging" Australians on the cost of sending parcels.

If you run an online business you might be interested to know that from today Australia Post prices for prepaid parcels are increasing.

The changes were included along with the introduction of trackable domestic parcels sent via Australia Post retail outlets and a sameday metro-to-metro "courier post" option for medium-size satchels and "assessed parcels" if sent by 2pm.

But it's the price changes that have some people concerned.

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, prices will increase by as much as 30 per cent in some cases some depending on the destination. We recommend reading the Sydney Morning Herald article, which has more observations about the changes.

An online petition about the price changes had received more than 1,500 signatures at the time of writing - many who have added comments claiming it will affect their business.

"This is starting to cripple small businesses that are trying to stay alive against people buying from hong kong and overseas where postage is free!" said one commenter.

The Australia Post web site also states that "The price of postage for our eBay / Australia Post flat rate satchels and boxes will increase on 15 April 2013."
