When was the last time you took a day out of your normal schedule to do some important thinking about the future of your business?

We admit, it can be hard to find more than a couple of hours to spend at a business function.

But we will say this - we attended last year's NAB National Small Business Summit and we were pleasantly suprised at how useful it was. You can read about it here.

Why go?

The thing is, it is an eye-opener just how much free, useful information you can find at these events. Your bank, government departments who's task it is to help small businesses, various agencies - they've all got guides explaining in plain english things like tax and basic business fundamentals.

Plus, there's the bonus of potentially meeting other small business people with useful ideas.

Finding time to attend can be a nightmare, but once you're there, the act of taking a day out of your normal schedule gives you some very important breathing space to think about the future of your business. And to think about some planning.

But don't let us try and convince you.

When and where is this year's National Small Business Summit?

The 2013 NAB National Small Business Summit is at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre on the 24-25 July.

The Summit web site lists these topics for the agenda:

  • policies on workplace relations
  • collection of superannuation and paid parental leave
  • women in business
  • burdensome compliance and regulation demands on small business people

The summit is being viewed by the government as a significant platform for voicing important policy conversations in run-up to the election. In attendance will be Federal Minister for Small Business, The Hon Chris Bowen MP and the Shadow Federal Minister for Small Business, The Hon Bruce Billson MP.

While the full two-day tickets will run you a pricey $950, the event organisers have also setup a breakfast session tailored to small business owners followed by access to the Exhibition until 10:30am for $70. Registrations open in late March.

If you are going, add a comment below or email us at inbox@bit.com.au and perhaps we can meet you there.
