Parts of Blacktown and Penrith will be the first established areas in Sydney to be served by the NBN's fibre optic network.

The first cable in Blacktown was hauled yesterday on the corner of Main Street and Marcel Crescent, and the first in Penrith went in today on the corner of Brown Street and Stafford Road (click links to see maps).

Initially, 16,800 premises in the Blacktown area will be served by NBN fibre: "we're aiming for some areas of construction to be completed by July, which means homes and businesses are expected to be able to connect to services over the NBN shortly after," said NBN Co spokesperson Darren Rudd.

Around 9,100 premises in Penrith will be served by the initial rollout, with service being available in a similar timeframe.

Mr Rudd added that work is under planning or construction in parts of Seven Hills, Londonderry and Agnes Banks.

"NBN Co is aiming for construction in this suburbs to be completed during 2013," he said. "By mid-2015 construction is set to have commenced or be completed for more than 1,000,000 premises across New South Wales."

Previous NBN rollouts in metropolitan Sydney have been limited to new developments.
