Good news if you work in the Brisbane city centre and you're an Optus customer relying on fast mobile Internet.

The Brisbane city centre will be the latest location to benefit from faster wireless Internet, with Optus announcing plans to begin turning on 4G from next week.

Optus has announced a city rollout in December and January, but in the meantime Brisbane workers will have to be content with small pockets of reception in "selected areas" of the CBD from next week.

No doubt this will only be of benefit if you happen to be lucky enough to spend most of your working day in one of these locations. Optus has a 4G coverage map here.

Still, if fast, portable wireless Internet is important for getting day to day work done, we'd recommend looking at it for your next phone. In addition to Brisbane, Optus has announced today that 4G is now available in Surfers Paradise (at four sites) with more sites to be switched on in December.

Optus also has 4G services in Newcastle, Sydney, Perth and Melbourne.

More 4G sites are planned "across south-east Queensland" in the next 12 months, according to an Optus statement released today.

More providers are gradually starting to make more noise about 4G - iiNet recently announced 4G mobile (it uses the Optus network), and Telstra recently announced plans to double coverage in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane within the next 10 months.

See more about the locations and cities where Telstra has 4G coverage here.

While the technology has the potential for much faster speeds than 3G (Optus advertising has pictures of users' faces being mashed like they’re in a wind tunnel) it's not perfect. At the risk of repeating ourselves, tests by various technology sites show that speeds aren't always reliable or consistent.
