Sheepskin and wool bedding sold to Korean and Chinese tourists visiting the Gold Coast has resulted in a $55,000 fine.
A Queensland company has learnt a painful lesson in being careful what claims you make about the products you sell, after being hit with a $55,000 penalty.
The retailer, UNJ Millenium Pty Ltd, has been ordered by the Federal Court to pay, after admitting to claiming falsely claiming its bedding were Australian made, and contained 100% sheep or alpaca wool – when they did not.
According to a media statement from the ACCC released today, the ruling covered “rugs and car seat covers”, “duvets, underlays and pillows” and “bedding products”.
In 2011 an Internet trader was penalised $430,000 for using the Australian-made logo on "ugg" boots made in China. At the time, the ACCC warned that it considered "country of origin" claims to be valuable marketing tools and would "not hesitate to take action against businesses which mislead consumers about the origin of the goods they are selling."
