Free Internet is very handy. Now you can add Starbucks to the list of places you can find it in Australia.

We only just noticed this, but Starbucks has been advertising free WiFi in its Australian shops since earlier this month.

The only catch is you have to buy a drink – fair enough – and then you’ll get the code. (Note: the Starbucks site says the Wi-Fi is not available at their Westmead, Brisbane Hospital or Elizabeth St shops).

While we doubt this will lure coffee aficionados away from their favourite coffee shops, it’s still something to keep in mind for smaller shop owners trying to compete. McDonalds is already well-known among Internet junkies for its free WiFi.

The Lifehacker site has a handy guide to finding free WiFi. Big chains offering free Internet include Hungry Jack’s, Officeworks and IKEA, according to the site.

Meanwhile, we’ve reported about free WiFi in pubs, ferries, train stations and planes. Anecdotal stories suggest that hotels are getting better, but it’s still not standard.
