With the purchase price of the full Adobe Creative Suite running at close to $4,000, a monthly subscription of $49.99 can make sense.

Rather than compelling you to buy your software and pay for it all at once, the idea is that you pay a monthly fee that gives you access to the software and all upgrades. As long as you keep your subscription active, you can continue to create new files and edit your files.

With the purchase price of the full Adobe Creative Suite running at close to $4,000, a monthly subscription of $49.99 can make sense - particularly, if you factor in that you'll probably upgrade that boxed version of the software every couple of years.

There are some less expensive options as well. If you're a photographer and all you need is Photoshop for image manipulation and Lightroom for image management, there's a $9.99 per month option. If you're upgrading from the desktop versions, there's a significant discount for the first year of Creative Cloud bringing the monthly cost to $29.99. All of these prices are based on taking out a one-year commitment.

There are also mobile apps that complement Adobe's desktop software. Adobe also provides you with access to 20GB of online storage so you can access your files from anywhere. Here's an example of how this could work.

You can shoot a photo with your high-end dSLR camera. That image can be transferred to your tablet where you can show it to your client and get their feedback. Using the mobile version of Photoshop, you can do some preliminary edits and annotate the image. When you get to the office, you can open the image and carry out the final edits using the more powerful desktop version. You can then share the final image with the client by giving them a link to the cloud-based version of the photo.

In our view - this is probably the future of software. For many years, users have been put off from buying up to date applications and have held on to software well beyond its use-by date - Windows XP is a great example.

By bringing costs down to manageable monthly amounts the vendors avoid having to convince you to part with hundreds or thousands of dollars at a time. For your business, you get to hold on to your money and have access to upgrades without having to shell out more cash.
