The trial MetroGo store is aimed at city workers ducking in to grab breakfast, lunch or snacks.
Woolworths has become the latest retailer to open a retail store in Australia that doesn’t take cash.
The cashless MetroGo trial store opens in Sydney’s Surry Hills today and is designed to make shopping “seamless” for busy inner-city workers.
The small store focuses on “healthier breakfast, lunch and snacking options”, which customers can pay for by using credit or eftpos card, or using Woolworth’s Scan&Go app. The app allows customers to use their smartphones to scan and pay for goods as they walk through the store.
Woolworths will continue allowing cash payments in all its Woolworths supermarket and Metro Stores, stated Justin Nolan, General Manager Woolworths Metro.
In May this year 7-Eleven opened what it claimed was Australia’s first cashless and cardless convenience store in Richmond in Melbourne. The store doesn’t have a checkout and customers must use a smartphone app to scan and pay for goods.
