Telstra follows Optus in giving customers extra data during COVID-19

Planning to spend a lot of time at home over the coming weeks? Telstra and Optus are offering some customers more data at no extra charge.

Telstra is giving its small business and consumer customers extra data to help them work and communicate from home during the COVID-19 crisis.

Telstra small business and consumer home broadband customers that have ADSL, NBN or cable plans will receive unlimited data at no extra charge from Thursday 19 March until 30 April 2019. They will receive this data automatically.

Update: we've published a quick guide to the big-name free tech tools and data offers for making remote work easier during COVID-19.

And post-paid small business and consumer Telstra customers with handheld or mobile broadband plans can apply to receive an extra 25GB to use in Australia within 30 days. They must apply using the Telstra 24x7 and My Telstra Apps from Thursday until 31 March.

Pre-paid Telstra customers can apply to receive 10GB of additional data to use in Australia within 28-30 days, depending on their plan. They’ll need an active recharge of $40+ and can apply for the extra data via the Telstra 24x7 and My Telstra Apps from Thursday until 31 March.

Telstra encouraged its customers to use the latest Telstra 24x7 and MyTelstra apps for iOS and Android to check their accounts and pay bills. This may ease the pressure on its call centres.

Telstra's annoncement follows news that Optus will offer eligible post-paid customers an extra 20GB during April this year. And Optus prepaid customers can receive an extra 10GB if they recharge $40 or more during April. These customers must activate the offer using the MyOptus App.

Optus plans to make more information about these offers available through the MyOptus App by 20 March.

Various other technology companies are also offering free access to remote working tools. These include 3CX, which is allowing Australian businesses to download a free, three-year license to use its web meeting platform (if you register via this url).

LogMeIn is also offering “Emergency Remote Work Kits” to governments, educational institutions, healthcare organisations, non-profits and existing LogMeIn customers. The kit includes free use of its video-conferencing, webinar, virtual events, remote IT support and remote device access tools for three months.
