Sync and share files without the cloud – for free

From the developers of BitTorrent, Resilio Sync allows you to synchronise files and folders between your devices.

There are many cloud-based file synchronisation services, including Dropbox, Google Drive and others that we have compared recently. These services all use the same method of synchronising your files. Choose the data you want across your computers and the content is uploaded to the cloud and then made available across your other devices.

But what if you don’t want to use a third-party service?

We have previous explained how to create your own personal cloud using a network attached storage (NAS) appliance, but there is another option for those who prefer to sync between devices without having to buy a new storage appliance.

Resilio Sync is free peer-to-peer (P2P) software that allows you to sync files between devices. It’s from the developers of BitTorrent, so you know it’s already using secure tried-and-tested technology.

Simply choose the folders and files you want to keep between devices and Resilio Sync will do the rest. Make a change to one of these files and Resilio will make sure it’s updated across your devices.

An interesting feature is that Resilio has desktop, smartphone and NAS drive install options, so you can even synchronise data between your network drive and laptop.

There’s no need to worry about a storage limit, as you would with free cloud services – although it may affect your broadband and mobile bandwidth consumption.

There’s a paid version called Resilio Sync Home Pro that has extra features like Selective Sync that allows you to download only the files that you need, when you need them, without having to replicate entire folders on every device.

Pro also has a ‘One Time Send’ function that makes it easy to send large files with other users without worrying about the attachment size limit of many email services.  It’s ideal for remote workers: simply edit the file on your computer and then make it available to other authorised users directly from your device. They can then edit the same file on their computer and share it back with you.

Resilio Sync is available as a free download for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, other mobile platforms, and various NAS brands.

Resilio Sync Home Pro is available for a one-time US$59.99 purchase. Resilio Sync Family, which offers all the features of Pro and supports up to five users, costs US$99.90 up front. Resilio Sync Business, which also offers the advanced features, costs US$29 per month for five users with two devices each, and there are higher plans if you need to include more users and devices.
