Symantec goes one step above Norton

Norton is one of many well-known names in antivirus, but if you have a small business, there is now a step up with a new Symantec product.

Here's a question: what do you do if you have a small business with 10 to 20 computers, but you don't want to have to fiddle around with setting up anti-virus on each one?

Aimed at businesses with between five and 250 computers, SEP SBE 2013 provides the usual protection against viruses and other malware, but it is more easily installed and managed on lots of different computers than the Norton products yet less complex than the full-blown Symantec Endpoint Protection.

The product aimed to fill the gap between the needs of consumers and large organisations.

Symantec has previously served consumers and micro businesses with its Norton line of security products.

At the other end of the spectrum is Symantec Endpoint Protection, designed to meet the needs of enterprise customers.

SEP SBE 2013's management screen can be run from a computer inside the business or over the internet (as a "cloud" service) from Symantec.

Either way, it lets you adjust security settings, view reports and so on.

For those of you who prefer to outsource your IT management, SEP SBE 2013 can be controlled by Symantec partners via the Symantec Partner Management Console.

It also integrates with remote monitoring and management software from certain other vendors.

SEP SBE 2013 also features data loss protection and (with the cloud-managed option) USB device control to protect against malicious files on USB storage.

Prices range from $36.22 to $89.49 per device, depending on the number of devices licensed and the duration of the subscription (one to three years).
