We reported a spate of safety recalls relating to tech products last winter, and while all seemed quiet since then we now have the first recall of 2016 and it involves one of the biggest names in the IT industry.
The mains cable supplied in Australia with Microsoft's Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and some Surface Pro 3 units was recalled on Friday, due to the risk of failure where the cable joins the connectors at either end. The issue could lead to a fire or electric shock.
Affected products were sold by Microsoft, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, and Microsoft's authorised resellers.
The substandard cables were included with units sold between these dates:
Surface Pro, 9 February 2013 - 15 March 2015
Surface Pro 2, 22 October 2013 - 15 March 2015
Surface Pro 3, 20 June 2014 - 15 July 2015
According to the ACCC's notice, owners should stop using the cable immediately and discard it to prevent reuse.
A replacement featuring improved strain relief where the cable enters the connectors can be obtained free of charge from Microsoft by ordering online or by phone (1300 956 757).
One replacement cable will be provided per affected Surface, and Microsoft says delivery will take four to six business days.
Even though all versions of the Surface used a proprietary connector on the tablet end, the power brick itself has a standard "figure eight" C7 plug, so if you need a charge before the replacement arrives you can use a suitable cable from another piece of equipment such as a mains-powered radio.
