Square adds ecommerce and POS options

You can now use Square to accept payments on your website or when using third-party point-of-sale software.

Square has become well known for its low-cost payment card readers and associated apps, and for its flat-rate payments processing service that makes them useful.

In its latest development the company has created a ‘Build with Square’ platform, comprising APIs (application programming interfaces) that allow Square to be used to process ecommerce payments and payments entered through other companies’ POS software.

The company has already set up integrations with BigCommerce, Weebly, Ecwid, WooCommerce, Magento and Wix, so minimal effort is needed to add Square payments to new or existing sites on those platforms.

And if you have a custom-built online store, Square estimates that it would only take a developer a few hours to add Square payments – as little as 10 lines of code are needed.

While Square offers a free POS system, it realises that it is not right for every business. So it has created another API that allows POS developers to add Square payments to their systems.

The first company to take advantage of this is SwiftHero,  one of several ‘find a tradie’ services. Integration with Square means tradies can now accept card payments from inside the SwiftHero app.

The same 1.9 percent transaction fee applies to Square payments whether they are processed through the Square app or through POS software using the API.

The fee for online payments is 2.2 percent, reflecting the higher risk associated with ‘card not present’ transactions.
