Point of sale software gains analytics capabilities.
The Square Register app for iOS and Android that replaces conventional cash registers has now been augmented with a Dashboard app to provide realtime analytics and reporting.
Square Dashboard can reveal hour-by-hour sales, report by item and category, reveal trends that may indicate periods when extra staff are required, and so on.
One advantage of the new app is that it allows owners and managers to keep an eye on what's happening when they are away from the store and without having to distract staff from their primary duties.
An early adopter is Thomas Kelly, owner of Melbourne-based Standing Room Coffee. He uses Square Dashboard to keep track of what's happening at his Royal Arcade (CBD) coffee bar while working at the original premises on the University of Melbourne's main Parkville campus.
"I check the Dashboard App at least twice a day, usually at midday and close to the end of the day, to see how the store is tracking. Because Royal Arcade is a new cafe for me, it's motivating to see growth in real time," said Kelly.
"Using the Square Dashboard app encourages me to actually check my reports every hour and see how Royal Arcade is tracking. It's helping me to be more mobile with how I manage my business, and now I can work from anywhere."
The company did not indicate if or when an Android version will be available.
As recently reported, Square has yet to offer a card reader to its Australian users.
