Oh look, there's another notebook battery recall, and once again Panasonic is implicated.
The latest notebook battery recall primarily affects Sony Vaio models SVE15137CGP, SVE15138CGB, SVE15138CGS and SVE15138CGW, sold between December 2012 and September 2013.
There is potential for overheating, which could result in burns or even fires.
But affected batteries may have been fitted to a much wider range of models, either as a replacement or spare battery, or during a repair. So owners of the following Vaio model series should also check their batteries: VPCCA1/2/3/4, VPCCB1/2/3/4, SVE14A1/2/3, VPCEH1/2, VPCEJ1/2, SVE1411/2/3, SVE1512/3 and SVE1712/3.
Sony provides an online tool for checking whether a specific battery is covered by the recall .
Sony will provide free replacements for affected batteries.
If your battery is affected, stop using it immediately. It is OK to continue using the computer on mains power as long as the battery has been physically removed (yep, these notebooks come from the days when you could still do that...).
