Snap up a .melbourne Internet address for your business

Doing business in Melbourne? If you want a .melbourne Internet address then read on.

If your business operates in Melbourne, you might be interested to know you've only got a week until some predict there will be a rush to snap up .melbourne Internet addresses.

Trademark owners, government organisations and existing .au domain registrants are given priority until 26 September. If two or more apply for the same domain, there will be an auction.

Then there will be a 'landrush' period from 1 October to 9 November, where eligible organisations and individuals (Victorian residents and registered entities with a Victorian address) can apply for a .melbourne domain. Again, clashing applications will be handled by an auction process.

Normal operations commence on 11 November, and then registrations from eligible applicants will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The annual fee depends on the registrar you choose. Among those highlighted by ARI Registry Services, prices range from $65 to $120.

We reported last year that many new global top level domains (gTLDs) were becoming available, aimed at specific business segments (eg, .hotel and .shop) or geographical areas (eg, .adelaide).

The expectation is that some businesses will register their own domains (eg, kevinspizza.melbourne) while others will take advantage of the availability of so-called premium domains (eg, pizza.melbourne) and then make subdomains (eg, kevins.pizza.melbourne) available to others.
