Setting up a NAS? Western Digital now has 6TB WD Red drives

Setting up a NAS for your home office? Here is a brief rundown of Western Digital's new WD Red and WD Red Pro drives.

If you use a NAS, you'll want to ensure you choose hard drives that are suited for the purpose.

Although you could potentially use any drive and simply buy on price, there are drives that are specifically designed for the always-on and always-busy operation of a NAS. Western Digital designates their NAS-ready drives as WD Red.

Western Digital has announced that the WD Drives will now come in capacities of between 1TB and 6TB. Although a single 6TB drive might seem expensive it's substantially cheaper than two 3TB drives and means you'll be able to fit more data into your NAS.

Western Digital has split their NAS-ready drives into two groups: WD Red and WD Red Pro. The WD Red Pro drives are specifically designed for use in larger NAS devices that support more than eight drives. For smaller NAS units - which is what most small businesses would use - the WD Red line will suffice.

Here are the recommended prices although our experience is that you should be able to find lower prices if you shop around once the initial demand for the larger drives subsides.
