Race about to begin for $199 iPad mini

A sale scheduled at noon today includes an iPad mini for $199, and a 1TB Western Digital hard drive for $49. No doubt competition will be fierce.

[Update: As expected, Catch of the Day is now advertising that the iPad mini has sold out since the time of writing.]

Starting at noon today, web site Catch of the Day will begin a one day "flash sale" of various tech gadgets (they're calling the sale "Catchapolooza").

We normally steer clear of mentioning each and every tech "sale" we spot, but these three items grabbed our attention:

  • Western Digital My Passport 1TB USB3 Portable Hard Drive - $49. This portable hard drive has an RRP of $149. Today it will set you back just $49. Given that this is a USB 3 device and not one of the low-end USB 2 devices that’s often run out at low prices this looks to be a great buy.
  • The iPad mini 16GB Wi-Fi in black will be selling for $199 - well under the recommended price of $368.
  • The Samsung Galaxy S III will be selling for $345, compared to the RRP of $644 - although the street price of the S III is closer to $450 so it’s not quite as big a bargain as it seems.

Important!
As always, it pays to do your research before diving into a purchase. Most items will only have very limited availability with new items going on sale throughout the day. A new item will appear on the site every half hour.

In fact, we found that when we visited the site today, the site was displaying the following message:

"By entering CatchOfTheDay.com.au today, I understand that I'll be competing against 400,000+ other fast Aussies for just a handful of products... so my chances of actually getting anything are as unlikely as jamming backstage with the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Lollapalooza festival. But I’ll give it a shot anyway and I promise not to whinge to my friends or CatchOfTheDay.com.au if I miss out!"

Enough said.
