The latest version of Xero's iPhone app includes notifications when new transactions arrive from bank feeds.
According to Xero, the peak time for bank reconciliations on mobile apps is 7.15am, with a second, smaller peak at 8.45pm. That makes sense: if a promised payment doesn't arrive on the agreed day, you probably want to get straight onto the customer concerned.
But as the company points out, bank feeds aren't 100% infallible. Sometimes a particular bank's feed may be delayed (as happened with St George this morning), and sometimes there are other problems that take time for Xero to fix.
When either situation occurs, the only option has been to keep checking for new transactions.
That changes with the latest release of Xero's iOS app. Once the user has tapped "Tell me about new transactions" for a particular account, a notification is displayed when its feed is updated.
The notification usefully includes the net change in the account balance, and tapping it takes the user into that account within the app to allow the new transactions to be reviewed and reconciled.
Xero says it will add more notifications to the app, but "we're going to wait and see how it's used. We're cautious about adding too many notifications given how many you probably already get." Very wise. The company also hinted at forthcoming support for Apple Watch.
