Laptop sale: Dell Inspiron 15R, XPS 15, Inspiron 15z Ultrabook on sale

Dell is always advertising sales, but we thought we’d share this link to their End of Financial Year Sale as it includes $200 off the Dell XPS 15.

The Dell XPS 15 is a laptop that is no longer brand new, but was reviewed very favourably last year.

Here are the models advertised in the Dell End of Financial Year Sale:

Dell XPS 15

  • "online price" $1399
  • "cash off" $200
  • "discounted price" $1,199

The review we published last year described this laptop as being one of the best 15 inch laptops on the market at the time. It's not very light, at 2.6Kg, but if you're after a solid all-rounder, this isn't a bad choice.

The XPS 15 comes in at the same sale price as the 15z, but forgoes the touchscreen and Windows 8 for a larger capacity battery (9-cell Battery) and a 1 year Next Business Day Onsite Service warranty.

Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition and 15z Ultrabook (Touch)

  • "online price" $1,399
  • "cash off" $400
  • "discounted price" $999

The Inspiron 15R Special Edition (pictured) gives you the same processor, display and amount of RAM as the Vostro 3560 but throws in a bigger hard drive (1.0TB), Blu-ray optical drive and a 15 month McAfee Security Center software licence.

You also get improved build quality with an aluminum metal design. Like the other laptops here, it's not light. This one weighs in at a hefty 2.76 kg.

If you’re after something lighter and prefer a touch screen, then the 15z Ultrabook, which is also on sale, might fit the bill - it's a bit lighter at 2.17kg. This is also the only Dell laptop on sale that comes with Windows 8 instead of Windows 7.

The Dell Vostro 2520 and 3560 laptops

Vostro 2520

  • "online price" $599
  • "cash off" $100
  • "discounted price" $499

Vostro 3560

  • "online price" $1,199
  • "cash off" $400
  • "discounted price" $799

The Vostro series offers reasonable bang for buck, particularly if you spring for the 3560 which comes with a more powerful processor, Full HD display (1920x1080) and double the RAM (8GB) of the entry level 2520 model.

Also worth mentioning is that the 3560 comes with a small 32GB mSata drive, which will help make booting up Windows, launching applications and copying files a bit faster.  It also comes with a 500GB traditional hard drive.
