HP batteries recalled

Another batch of notebook batteries has been recalled due to potential overheating.

This time the recalled batteries affect a range of notebooks sold by HP between 2013 and 2015, including certain Compaq, Envy, Pavilion and ProBook models. A full list, along with details of the free replacement process, can be found on this HP site.

As usual, the issue is that the batteries may overheat, causing burns or in some cases starting fires.

Not every battery fitted to stated models is affected by the problem, but "HP encourages you to validate all batteries shipped with the notebook computer, purchased as accessories or spares, or provided as replacements through Support."

Any affected battery should be removed immediately and the notebook used only on mains power until the replacement arrives.

Panasonic, Sony and Toshiba all recalled certain notebook batteries in the first half of 2016, and the underlying problem dates back many years and has affected most of the big-name notebook companies.

It may be worth checking the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's recall website to see if your computer is at risk.
