Putting a TV that also displays your marketing messages into your cafe or shop is cheaper and easier than you might have realised.
Samsung's new Smart Signage TVs are LED HD TVs that can also display promotional material without requiring any extra software or a permanently-connected PC to drive it.
At $999 for the 40in model and $1399 for the 48in variant, they are quite affordable - a quick check on Samsung 40in and 48in TVs found prices around $800 and $1100. You even get a wall-mount kit as part of the deal.
They are even easy to buy - there's no need to go to a specialist retailer as they are being sold at Officeworks.
The Smart Signage TVs include content management software that runs on a Windows PC to design content and schedule its display - perhaps breakfast specials until 9am, coffee and cake deals until 11.30, then lunch suggestions and so on - plus iOS and Android mobile apps for on-the-go content editing, uploading and scheduling. If you don't have an existing Wi-Fi network, the phone or tablet can connect directly to the TV's built-in Wi-Fi interface.
As you'd expect from any TV these days, there's also the ability to play photos, videos and music from USB storage.
One thing that's not completely clear from Samsung's press release or web site is whether live TV can be displayed picture-in-picture style with these models.
The TVs are designed for heavy use - up to 16 hours a day and seven days a week - and are guaranteed for three years for commercial use.
