Epson EcoTank printers provide low running costs for remote workers

EcoTank consumables are 90 percent cheaper than those for laser printers, according to business manager Gwen Risser.

Jubilee Christian College is an independent P-12 school with 112 students at its Atherton (south-east of Cairns) campus plus another 850 distance education students located mostly in south-east Queensland.

Risser, the college's business manager, explained that there are very few private distance education providers in Queensland, and while there is no shortage of schools in the state's south-east, if parents are dissatisfied with their local schools for some reason then distance education may be the only viable alternative.

To support these off-campus students, the college employs between 50 and 60 remote teaching staff who work from their own homes. Around 80 percent of these teachers have been provided with printers, and the current standard is the Epson ET-4750 EcoTank multifunction device.

Risser first heard about the EcoTank family when listening to one of Leo Laporte's podcasts around three years ago. "I was keen to try them," she said.

The ET-4750 and several other broadly comparable products share the advantages of being compact all-in-ones that are easy to use, but what sets the EcoTank family apart is the low cost per page largely thanks to the use of inexpensive bottled ink. A $29.99 bottle of black ink is enough to print around 7500 pages, while $44.97 pays for a set of cyan, yellow and magenta ink bottles that are good for a nominal 6000 colour pages.

These consumables are 90 percent cheaper than those for the laser printers that the college previously purchased for remote teachers, Risser said.

So when new staff are hired they are equipped with an ET-4750 if they need a printer, and as the old lasers reach the end of their lives they are being replaced with ET-4750s.

Typical uses include printing worksheets, samples of students' work, and records of communication with families, scanning documents so they can be emailed, and copying materials for activity days.

The ET-4750 has been "very reliable," she said.
