Epson adds to scanning options

Looking for a versatile, high-volume scanner? Epson’s new WorkForce DS-780N could fit the bill.

There are some good reasons why you might want a dedicated scanner rather than relying on a multifunction printer, and the new Epson WorkForce DS-780N looks to cover at least two of those reasons: fast, high-volume scanning and versatility.

The DS-780N features a 100-sheet automatic document feeder and 45ppm colour scanning at 300dpi. Both sides of a page can be scanned at the same time, giving an effective speed of 90ppm.

It offers a "slow mode" for scanning delicate documents, and the double-feed detector can be bypassed when scanning envelopes or pages with sticky notes attached.

The scanner can handle document sizes from business card to A3 paper, with a long document mode for items up to 6096mm. Acceptable media weights range from 27 to 413gsm.

Its Epson Scan 2.0 software incorporates a range of features including the generation of searchable PDF files, advanced colour dropout, automatic de-skew, auto page size detection, multi-document size detection, secure PDF generation, text enhancement; auto area segmentation, punch holes removal, and blank page skipping.

Epson’s Document Capture Pro software can be used to centralise the management of multiple scanners, and the DS-780N's control panel can be locked to prevent unauthorised tampering. Administrators benefit from maintenance alerts and usage reporting.

Users can be authenticated via PIN codes, third-party IC cards or LDAP.

The $1,299 WorkForce DS-780N joins the two scanners in the same WorkForce family that Epson introduced late last year.
