Download the free new version LibreOffice word processor

You can now download the latest version 4.0 of LibreOffice.

With the Home and Business edition of Microsoft Office running at about $260 for one user it's easy to see the cost of your computer double, triple or more as you add software.

To save money one option is to use free software, like LibreOffice is one such application. As the Lifehacker site reports, you can now download the latest version 4.0 of LibreOffice.

There are pros and cons to this. The upside is you save money.

Be aware though, that these products aren't the same as using Microsoft Office. This review of LibreOffice points out,  it can open the latest DOCX files, but there are niggles like some formatting not carrying across.

In summary, the key things to understand about LibreOffice are:

  1. It's functionally similar to Microsoft Office but not identical. That means it does most of the same things but looks different.
  2. It's free.
  3. Files you create in LibreOffice can be opened and edited in Microsoft Office and vice versa.
  4. As Microsoft uses some proprietary features, documents and spreadsheets with complex formatting may not render perfectly in LibreOffice and vice versa.
  5. Libre Office comes in Windows, Linux and Mac versions.

One of the costs many small businesses often underestimate is software. It's easy to set your attention on the cost of a computer that can cost anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of dollars but your PC or notebook is an expensive paperweight without the right applications.
