Boost your NAS capacity with Seagate IronWolf

Seagate's new IronWolf Pro drive means each bay of your network attached storage device can store 10TB of data.

Let’s face it, we store more digital stuff every day. As we've explained previously, a network attached storage (NAS) device is a convenient way for a small business to store and protect data.

How much you can store on a NAS depends on three main factors: how many drives it takes, how the drives are used (some arrangements sacrifice capacity for redundancy), and the capacity of the individual drives.

Seagate has addressed the latter point with the IronWolf Pro, which comes 6, 8 and 10TB versions.

But it’s not just about capacity. IronWolf Pro drives are designed for NAS use, and include vibration sensors (packing multiple drives close together in a NAS can lead to vibration without this feature) and a rated workload rate of 300TB a year (a shared drive generally gets a lot more active use than one connected to a single computer).

In addition, IronWolf Pro comes with a five-year warranty and includes two years of Seagate's Rescue Data Recovery service, which covers recovery following damage caused by accidents or incidents such as fire or flooding. Data recovery can be very expensive if you have to pay for it, so this could prove to be a valuable feature.

IronWolf Pro is endorsed by Qnap and Synology, two of the leading NAS vendors.

“We are always thrilled to see new additions to Seagate's hard drive line for NAS, including the IronWolf Pro, which works seamlessly with Synology NAS to support the high storage capacity required for a variety of organisations ranging from small to larger businesses,” said Synology head of product management Chad Chiang.

And Qnap general manager Meiji Chang said: “Optimised for the most challenging NAS application environments, the Seagate IronWolf Pro works efficiently to bring out the best performance of QNAP NAS. The IronWolf Pro also provides high storage capacity to meet the increasing demands of data storage growth across SMB and Enterprise NAS users, leaving no doubt that the agile and powerful IronWolf Pro will empower NAS usage to a new level.”
