There is now an iPhone app that lets Australians pay for a taxi ride without showing their credit card details or using cash.
If you haven't heard of goCatch,it's an app for the iPhone, iPad, Android and Windows Phone that displays on a map the participating taxis in your vicinity, lets you book a ride, and then watch the cab approach.
The latest news is that you can now pay the fare too using your phone and the goCatch app.
goCatch now includes PayPal payments, which offers advantages for passengers and drivers. Some people are concerned about credit card skimming (where criminals siphon off a copy of your credit details when you use your card), and taking the physical card out of the picture eliminates that risk.
Becuase the receipt is sent by email, you also no longer have to worry about carefully storing that little piece of thermal paper in order to check your statement or put in an expenses claim.
As you can link your PayPal account to a credit or debit card (or a bank account if you prefer), you can still use your company card or earn loyalty points.
Taxi drivers benefit from a further reduction in cash payments - some passengers that had been put off using their credit cards in cabs may be prepared to use PayPal via the app - and also from the "much reduced merchant rate".
The iPhone version of goCatch is the first to get PayPay integration, but it will be added to the other versions "at a later date."
goCatch is one of the beneficiaries of the cash prizes put up by the NSW Government for the Tech23 startup competition.
