The popular Splashtop 2 app is now free on the iPad and in our experience it works well. Click here to see what it does.
Earlier this month we ran through the abc’s of Remote Desktop using Logmein, but now there is another option in the free arena which enables you to access your computer remotely via your tablet.
If you have been caught out lately with not being able to access your computer while on the road, then you might be interested to know that the popular Splashtop 2 app is now free on the iPad.
A key benefit the makers of Splashtop 2 are claiming is a sub-30 millisecond latency, which means that it should give a less sluggish experience than other apps. Of course, this also depends on your broadband connection.

We've been using it with a third generation iPad over Wi-Fi to connect to a computer running Windows 8, and we did notice better performance (in terms of input lag) using Splashtop 2 than we I do with Logmein (we also recommend Logmein's products).
However, Splashtop 2 does come with a caveat in that it does not offer remote access over 3G without a $1.99 a month subscription - unlike the Logmein free version, which does.
Something else to be aware of: as is the case with Logmein, Splashtop 2 does not offer file transfers from your PC unless you shell out $1.99 a month subscription. But you can copy-and-paste content between your computer and tablet.
