Do you pay your bills online, but still get paper bills sent to your post box?
If you haven’t taken the next step of asking billers to stop sending you paper mail - and no doubt small businesses receive a lot of it - you now have a new option: the Australia Post Digital Mailbox.
The new mailbox is walled-off email account that promises to be secure, and have no spam. The theory is that only billers who are "certified" can send you messages, like banks and telephone companies.
In addition, you can also use the system to pay bills. The idea is that you only need to remember one password. The system can also be setup to send you reminders.
You can also use the system as a secure place to save important documents, like copies of Passports and birth certificates. You get 1GB of space (in addition to the mail sent to you by billers), and the fine print says that Australia Post "may from time to time offer you the option to purchase" more space.
It's not the only secure mailbox of this type for Australians - another site, Digital Post Australia offers a similar service.
In theory, it could be great way of reducing the amount of printed mail you have to sort through, though we suppose it depends on whether all your billers are prepared to send you bills this way.
So far, companies and organisations have signed up to use Australia Post's Digital MailBox include ANZ, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, Link Market Services, National Australia Bank, Yarra Valley Water, Telstra, AMP, Westpac, the Australian Taxation Office and the Department of Human Services.
We also wonder how much more convenient the one-password approach is to using one password to log onto your own bank's web site, and paying your bills that way.
