LG's Optimus primed to take on smartphone market
In an era of cookie cutter smartphones LG is trying to tempt a market with its first foray in smartphones with their new L-Series.

[Update: While LG is saying this is their first foray into smartphones, this seems to be ignoring a lot of recent history, as some readers have pointed out to us.]

The series will include four handsets; the flagship model Optimus L7, Optimus L5, Optimus L3 and Optimus L2-Dual SIM. The flagship model of the new range, the Optimus L7, will offer a 4.3-inch display, Android OS version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Optimus UI 3.0.

The Optimus L5 will also run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a new app called Quick Memo that lets users capture on-screen images, jot notes on the phone screen, using a finger or stylus, and then easily share them through social media networks, text messages and e-mail.

For those looking for something smaller, the Optimus L3 handset has a 3.2-inch display.

The model we're most interested in is the Optimus L2 as it has active Dual SIM capabilities - it can hold two SIM cards so you run business calls from one SIM and personal from another or take advantage cheaper call rates with different carriers. This isn't a unique feature but it's not very common.

Pricing for the L-Series:

  • Optimus L7 – available now, through Optus dealers for $269 pre-paid, or post-paid on a $30 plan. An exclusive white version is available through Allphones dealers
  • Optimus L3 – available early July through Telstra $99 pre-paid
  • Optimus L5 and Optimus L2 – available August from Boost mobile – broadly available through a range of retail outlets. Optimus L5 will be priced at $199 pre-paid and Optimus L2 at $119 pre-paid
