Wi-Fi and a beer, as Telstra beams into pubs

Pubs will be able to offer free Wi-Fi to drinkers in exchange for wirelessly connected advertising displays inside the pub

A deal between Coca-Cola Amatil (CCA) and Telstra will see free Wi-Fi connectivity for customers at thousands of licensed premises.

The agreement involves the installation of 3,000 digital media signage panels in licensed premises around Australia. Like the established CafeScreen service that can be found in cafes around the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth CBDs, the system displays digital content (largely advertising).

For the CCA deployment, Telstra will use its Next G 3G and 4G network to deliver content to the panels, and the spare capacity will be available for general Internet access by patrons. A key difference is that the Wi-Fi service will be targeted specifically at buyers of CCA products.

Although CCA is most commonly associated with the eponymous beverage and other soft drinks, the company's portfolio also includes a variety of alcohol brands including Jim Beam and Canadian Club. CCA has also announced its intention to re-enter the Australian beer market in December 2013.
