Telstra's Mobile Wi-Fi 4G lives up to its promise

Overall:

It looks like an old-school pager, but we tested this Telstra Mobile Wi-Fi 4G modem and it managed to connect five devices at 8Mbps. Read our review.

Although its 4G network is in its infancy, Telstra is pushing devices onto it regularly, such as the Samsung Tab 8.9 and the HTC Velocity.

The Mobile Wi-Fi 4G is a battery operated "Mi-Fi" style of personal hotspot device. The device is battery powered, with a promised 4 hours of life when in use, which was roughly what we saw in testing. When outside of 4G coverage, the device defaults to the still quite fast HSDPA+.

Testing on the fringes of Telstra’s 4G coverage, we managed to get 5 devices connected, with a top speed of 8Mbps. There are a few issues however, the most noticeable being the heat generated – this device really puts the hot in hotspot.

The design is also fairly retro, looking more like an old school pager and with very loud and crude beeping alerts.

In all, this is a very handy device for people wanting to get a variety of devices onto a 4G network.
