Plan ahead for your 05 mobile phone number

Plan ahead for your 05 mobile phone number

If your business starts with J, K or L now's the time to think about getting a vanity mobile phone number that makes it easy for your customers to remember you.

Even though we're running out of mobiles with the 04 prefix, ACMA is planning to rollout 05 numbers in the next few years.

Here's some good news. If your business name starts with the letters J, K or L now's the time to think about getting a vanity mobile number that makes it easy for your customers to remember you.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority, the body responsible for working out what phone numbers can be used by the carriers, will be releasing a new mobile number range around 2017. The new numbers will start with "05" rather than the familiar "04" as the old range is likely to be exhausted by then.

We'd expect that some services that use services already using the 05 prefix will be shifted to avoid confusion but if you've always wanted a number that includes your business name when using the letters assigned to each digit on the phone dialling pad, now's the time to plan ahead.

You can ask for a custom phone number at the time you connect a service or change number. There's an extra fee if you do this rather than take the next available number, although some carriers and stores will give you a choice of a couple of numbers at the time you get a service hooked up.
