Product Brief: Skype for Windows Phone

Product Brief: Skype for Windows Phone
Rating
Overall:

Skype for Windows Phone offers all the main features found on other platforms, including calls Skype-to-Skype and to regular numbers and it can be used over Wi-Fi and 3G.

Windows Phone is slowly but steadily adding all of the major apps to its library, and the latest to be ported over is Skype. It’s not a surprising development, given Microsoft acquired the company last year, but it’s a significant milestone nevertheless.

Skype for Windows Phone offers all the main features that are found on mobile clients for other platforms, including voice calling (both Skype-to-Skype and regular numbers), video calling (provided your handset has a front-facing camera), instant messaging, and group chats, and it can be used over Wi-Fi and 3G.

Since Windows Phone doesn’t support multi-tasking, however, Skype can’t run in the background, and this limits its usefulness somewhat – you need to have the app open and in the foreground to be alerted to incoming calls or messages, and exiting the app logs you off each time.
