Windows 8 goes RTM: should you care?

Microsoft has announced that its all new operating system, Windows 8, will be Released to Manufacturers (RTM) over the coming weeks. What does that mean? windows 8 rtm when date

Windows 8 represents a huge change for users of computers. It's as big a change as the shift from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 a decade and half ago. The familiar Start button has been jettisoned, huge square tiles cover the screen and many familiar tools have either been changed or shunted into the background.

If you use a service provider to manage your business's computers then they'll probably have a TechNet or MSDN subscription with Microsoft. In that case, they'll have access to Windows 8 on the 15th of August - well before the retail release on October 26. If they do, get them to set up a test system so you can see what it looks like and how it works with your software.

If you're not in a hurry, we'd suggest waiting till you buy your next computer before upgrading. Just because a new version of something comes out there's no reason why your old system is suddenly useless.

If you're planning to upgrade then make sure you check out these basic things you should do before upgrading to Windows 8.
