A recent survey of over 1000 small business owners by Telstra suggests that despite the risks, most small business operators would do it all over again, citing independence, freedom, flexibility and a sense of pride as the main motivations.

Being a Telstra study, the data they were after was around small business spending on technology and communications. More than half of the businesses surveyed plan to spend more technology than last financial year with half also wanting to find technical solutions to improve customer service, cash flow and getting new customers.

I'm not sure how I would succeed without the right tools. I rely on the cloud for my accounting software and sharing files. My smartphone, while not as cool-looking, is way more useful that Captain Kirk's communicator and my tablet means I can carry most of my office in the glovebox of my car.

In the new financial year, I expect to upgrade my smartphone but the desktop and laptop I have will probably stay as they are as I'm using them less and less as time goes on. I spend a lot of time out of the office so it makes sense to invest in mobility.
